About Us
The National Society of Black
Engineers (NSBE) South Africa was established in 1995, with its main focus
on academic progress of University students. The initial programmes included
weekly workshops where qualified engineers addressed students as guest
speakers. The focus of these workshops later became more academic and
included study groups, tutorial sessions and study aids.
The NSBE is a voluntary
organisation which was established with the vision of ensuring full
participation of Black Engineers in the mainstream economy, wealth creation
and distribution. Its purpose is to broaden the engineering skill-base by
promoting the engineering profession amongst Black people of South Africa
and recruiting aspiring and prospective engineers into the profession, and
encouraging their retention throughout their productive lifespan within the
profession.
There is a chronic shortage of engineers in South Africa, in South Africa,
and global. As a result, there is a global demand for engineers, with the
industry experiencing difficulty in retaining engineers.
These challenges are reflected in the construction, mining and

critical need.
