Student Mentorship Program (SMP)

One of the outcomes of the conference in December 2008, was the need for a student mentorship programme. The aim of this programme is to develop our students into becoming the future leaders of our economy. The SMPs mentee falls into one of two categories:

  • The engineering technician attending inCservice training
  • Engineering degree students

The concept of mentorship has a strong historical tradition throughout the world. Mentorship can be defined as the influence, guidance or direction exerted by a trusted and experienced guide. It has made significant impact on both the mentee, and the mentor. Today, mentorship is seen as a positive solution to many organisational challenges and difficulties. The purpose of the NSBEs SMP is :

  • To track the progress of the engineering student, and to provide assistance to ensure that the student remains fixed in his ultimate goal of the study of engineering
  • To develop the leadership potential of the students in the programme
  • To use the tool of mentorship in the NSBEs drive towards addressing the skills challenge in the South African economy

It is envisaged that through the process of mentoring, the following skills will be developed:

  • Technical Skills
  • Business and Entrepreneurial Skills
  • Professional career skills
  • Life Skills
